My Number One Test Model is an Alien

Yes, you read that right - an alien.

But first - I can’t recommend enough (especially in the commercial world) the practice of testing your light setups before your subjects or clients come in.

It will save you time, stress and you can really craft your light into something you’re happy with allowing you to focus on other more important things on the shoot day.

In my case, I use a 60cm talking ET soft toy. I got him for my 21st birthday (so he’s been with me quite a while now!) and he’s great for lighting tests.

He has large, realistic eyes that are perfect for keeping an eye on what my catchlights are doing - as I take portraits, the eyes are my main focus - after all they are the windows to one’s soul!

Now you may not be able to get your hands on an ET these days, but you can always use a substitute that closely matches what you’re going to shoot -

A fluffy breed of dog? Grab a fluffy dog toy that is maybe a similar size to the dog you’re shooting, or has similar colours - so you can test how they play off your background.

A product like a leather dog collar? Grab a  leather belt to see the differences of how the light reflects between the textures of the buckle vs the texture of the leather.

Taking the time to do some lighting tests before you get swept up in the fast pace of your shoot will save you time in the editing process and build consistency with your style and images.

Now please enjoy a collection of random test shots of ET…
